Whether the Plus tier is worth what it costs

Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise tier. It unlocks checkout customisation, scripting through Shopify Functions, B2B features, multiple storefronts and higher API limits. The question worth answering first is whether you need any of those, because the cost difference is substantial.

Most businesses on standard Shopify do not need Plus, and most businesses considering Plus are considering it for one specific blocked requirement rather than a general desire to upgrade. Identifying that requirement precisely is the whole decision, because a single limitation is sometimes solvable another way and sometimes genuinely the reason the tier exists.

The upgrade is usually driven by hitting the checkout wall. Standard Shopify restricts what can be changed in checkout, and a business that needs custom logic there, tiered discounts, delivery rules, fee handling, B2B pricing, finds no configuration that achieves it. At that point some businesses upgrade unnecessarily to solve something an app handles, and others delay upgrading while paying developers to build increasingly fragile workarounds outside checkout.

Who this is for

When this work makes sense

  • Businesses whose checkout requirement is genuinely blocked on standard Shopify
  • Companies running B2B alongside retail with account-specific pricing
  • Brands operating several storefronts for regions or sub-brands
  • High-volume stores hitting API rate limits or requiring dedicated support
  • Businesses whose workarounds have become their largest maintenance cost
How to choose

Questions worth asking any supplier

What specifically is blocked? One precise requirement, not a general sense of outgrowing the platform.

Could an app or a redesign of the flow solve it on standard Shopify?

What does the cost difference buy at your volume? For some stores the transaction fee difference alone justifies it.

Do you need B2B, multiple storefronts or checkout logic? Those are the genuine Plus cases.

What are your current workarounds costing in maintenance and risk?

How we work

Process

We test the blocked requirement against standard Shopify before recommending the upgrade. Frequently a requirement described as needing Plus is achievable with an app, a different flow, or accepting a small compromise, and the tier difference funds a great deal of development. Where it genuinely is a Plus case, checkout logic, B2B, multiple storefronts, the assessment says so quickly and with the reason stated.

The standard nine stages, discovery, strategy, UX/UI, development, content and SEO, testing, launch, measurement and continuous improvement, apply to every project. The paragraph above is what differs for this one.

Pricing

What moves the number

Pricing depends on scope, functionality, integrations and content requirements. These are the factors that change it most:

  • Checkout customisation complexity
  • Whether B2B features are being configured
  • Number of storefronts
  • Integrations with ERP or inventory systems
  • Whether migrating from standard Shopify or another platform
  • The platform subscription itself, which is substantially above standard tiers
Comparison

Standard Shopify, Plus, or headless on Shopify

Standard Shopify

Fits: The large majority of retail businesses

Limits: Checkout customisation is restricted; transaction fees unless using Shopify Payments

Shopify Plus

Fits: Genuine checkout logic, B2B, multiple storefronts, or high volume

Limits: Substantial subscription cost; unjustified without one of those requirements

Headless on Shopify

Fits: Brands wanting full front-end control on Shopify's commerce engine

Limits: Much larger build and permanent engineering commitment; separate from the tier question

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do we need Shopify Plus?

Probably not, unless you can name the specific thing that is blocked. The common genuine reasons are checkout logic, B2B with account pricing, and multiple storefronts. 'We are growing' is not a reason by itself, and the cost difference buys a lot of development elsewhere.

What can we customise in checkout on Plus?

Considerably more than standard, through the platform's supported extensibility and Functions, discount logic, shipping and payment customisation, and interface extensions at defined points. It is still a structured extension model rather than arbitrary code, which is a good thing for stability and worth understanding before you assume unlimited freedom.

Is it worth it for transaction fees alone?

For some high-volume stores, yes, the fee difference at scale can approach or exceed the subscription. That is arithmetic specific to your revenue and payment setup, and it is worth doing properly rather than estimating.

Can we run B2B and retail on one store?

On Plus, yes, with company accounts, separate catalogues and price lists. Below Plus this usually means apps or a second store, both of which introduce their own maintenance and data problems.

What about multiple countries?

Shopify Markets handles much of this below Plus. Plus adds more storefronts and more control where regions need genuinely separate experiences rather than currency and language variants.

Should we go headless instead?

That is a separate decision from the tier. Headless gives front-end control and does not change checkout capability, and it adds a substantial permanent engineering commitment. Businesses sometimes conflate the two questions and answer both wrongly.

How hard is migrating from standard Shopify?

Easier than migrating between platforms, since products, customers and orders stay within Shopify. The work is in rebuilding whatever workarounds existed to compensate for the limitations Plus removes, which is usually why you upgraded.

What happens to our apps and customisations when we upgrade?

Most carry across, and the ones worth auditing are the apps you installed to work around standard-tier limitations. Those frequently become unnecessary on Plus, and removing them is part of the upgrade rather than an afterthought. Each carries a monthly fee and page weight you no longer need. The audit usually finds two or three apps that existed only to approximate something Plus does natively.
