Whether Shopify is worth its monthly cost in India is a real question, not a rhetorical one

In India the Shopify question is genuinely open. At the margins many Indian stores run on, a recurring platform cost plus transaction charges is a real line item, and WooCommerce on your own hosting is a serious alternative rather than a downgrade. The honest answer depends on your order volume, your team and your appetite for maintenance.

Agencies tend to answer the Shopify question with a preference. We would rather answer it with arithmetic. Shopify buys you hosting, security, uptime and a checkout that someone else maintains. WooCommerce buys you lower recurring cost and more control, and charges you in maintenance instead, which of those is the better trade depends on numbers that belong to your business, and we will run them with you before recommending either.

The common mistake is choosing the platform first and discovering the operating reality afterwards. A store goes live on Shopify, then finds its logistics aggregator needs an app to talk to it properly, that the invoices the platform generates are not in the format its accounts team needs for GST purposes, and that INR pricing still leaves questions about how settlement works. The reverse happens too: a business picks WooCommerce to avoid the monthly fee, does not budget for hosting, patching or an update owner, and spends the saving several times over on neglect and recovery.

Who this is for

When this work makes sense

  • Indian businesses deciding between Shopify and WooCommerce and wanting the comparison done on their own numbers
  • Stores on Shopify that need proper logistics aggregator integration rather than tracking links pasted into emails
  • Merchants whose accounts team is rekeying or correcting every invoice the store produces
  • Businesses selling in INR domestically and starting to take international orders alongside
  • Stores migrating in either direction between Shopify and WooCommerce who want the URLs and data handled properly
How to choose

Questions worth asking any supplier

Ask the supplier to put both platforms' total running cost side by side at your volume, because a recommendation made without that arithmetic is a preference dressed as advice.

Ask what happens to invoicing, because a store producing documents your accounts team corrects by hand creates monthly work that never appears in the build quote.

Ask which logistics aggregators are genuinely integrated, because label generation and status callbacks behave very differently from a tracking link in a confirmation email.

Ask who maintains the platform if you choose WooCommerce, because the saving on recurring fees is real and so is the maintenance it transfers to you.

Ask how INR pricing, rounding and any international presentment will work, because these are settled far more cheaply before the build than after the first orders.

What you get

Deliverables

A written comparison of Shopify and WooCommerce running costs at your volume, including transaction charges, hosting and maintenance

Shopify build or migration with theme work done against your own conversion data, not a template's claims

Logistics aggregator integration with real label generation, status callbacks and exceptions in one place

Invoicing configured so the store's documents carry the fields your accounts team needs, reviewed with your accountant before launch

INR pricing, rounding and tax display set up deliberately, with international presentment where you sell abroad

Payment methods set up against what your entity can actually use, including UPI alongside cards

How we work

Process

We start this engagement with the platform arithmetic, before any design or theme conversation. That means your current or expected order volume, average order value, the transaction charges each option would attract, hosting costs on the WooCommerce side, and an honest estimate of the maintenance hours WooCommerce transfers to whoever ends up owning it. It is an unglamorous first week and it occasionally ends with us telling a client that the platform they were about to pay us to build on is the wrong one. That conversation is much cheaper now than after migration.

The standard nine stages, discovery, strategy, UX/UI, development, content and SEO, testing, launch, measurement and continuous improvement, apply to every project. The paragraph above is what differs for this one.

Pricing

What moves the number

Pricing depends on scope, functionality, integrations and content requirements. These are the factors that change it most:

  • Whether you are building new, migrating onto Shopify, or migrating away from it
  • Catalogue size and whether products migrate cleanly or need re-entering
  • How many aggregators and couriers need integrating, and which offer usable APIs
  • How much invoicing customisation your accounts team and accountant require
  • Whether you sell only in INR or also need international pricing and presentment
  • Theme approach, a configured commercial theme, a heavily modified one, or custom work
Comparison

Shopify or WooCommerce for an Indian store

Shopify

Fits: Stores wanting hosting, security, uptime and checkout maintained by someone else, with the volume to absorb recurring and transaction costs

Limits: You pay every month whether trade is good or not, checkout customisation is limited below the top tier, and app subscriptions accumulate

WooCommerce on your own hosting

Fits: Stores with lower or seasonal volume, or an internal developer, where the recurring saving is meaningful

Limits: You inherit hosting, patching, backups and a genuine security obligation, which needs a named owner rather than a good intention

Stay where you are for now

Fits: Stores whose real constraint is traffic, product range or delivery economics rather than the platform

Limits: Leaves the question open, and postponing it too long makes the eventual migration larger and more expensive

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify too expensive for an Indian store?

It depends entirely on your volume. The recurring fee and transaction charges are fixed obligations, so at low or seasonal order counts they weigh heavily against margin, while at steady volume they are often less than the maintenance WooCommerce transfers to you. We would rather run the arithmetic on your numbers, because both answers are correct for some businesses.

Is WooCommerce really cheaper once you include everything?

Sometimes, and less often than the headline suggests. The monthly saving is genuine, but hosting worth using, backups, patching and someone responsible for updates are real costs that move from an invoice to your own time or payroll. Businesses that budget for that honestly often do well on WooCommerce. Those that treat it as free tend not to.

Can Shopify produce invoices our accountant will accept?

With configuration and usually an app, yes, and it should be checked before launch rather than after. The fields your accounts team needs, how the document is numbered and what appears on it are matters we build to your accountant's specification. We are not chartered accountants, so that judgement stays with your own adviser.

How well does Shopify work with Indian logistics aggregators?

Reasonably, through apps and APIs, and quality varies a great deal between providers. The distinction worth insisting on is between a real integration that generates labels from the order and returns status callbacks, and a lightweight one that puts a tracking link in an email. The second looks identical in a demo and behaves very differently on an exception.

Should we price in INR only, or in other currencies too?

If you sell only within India, INR alone, configured so rounding and tax display behave the way customers expect. If you take international orders, presentment and settlement are separate decisions and both deserve attention before launch. Shopify Markets handles the storefront side competently; the banking side is where the questions actually are.

Can we migrate from WooCommerce to Shopify, or back?

Both directions are routine, and the care goes into URLs, product data and order history rather than the catalogue itself. Losing existing URLs is the expensive mistake, because it discards search visibility you already paid to earn. Order history and customer records need explicit planning too, since they do not map cleanly between the two.

What would make you tell us not to use Shopify?

Low or highly seasonal volume with an internal developer already on the team, or a model that needs checkout behaviour Shopify does not permit below its top tier. We have told clients this before and expect to again. If the answer is WooCommerce, the maintenance and security realities are set out on our WordPress page rather than glossed over.
