Local SEO as a programme, not a single lever

Local SEO is the combined work of ranking for searches tied to a place. It spans four surfaces that feed each other: your website's local content, your Google Business Profile, the consistency of your details across the web, and your reviews. Working on one while ignoring the others is the usual reason results stall.

Businesses often arrive having already tried local SEO, meaning they optimised one thing. Some worked on the profile and left a website that never mentions where they operate. Others wrote location pages while the profile sat half-complete. Local visibility is assembled from several signals, and the weakest one tends to set the ceiling.

The disconnect is usually between the website and the profile. The profile lists services the website never mentions. The website names areas the profile's service settings exclude. The phone number differs between the two. Meanwhile reviews arrive occasionally and unanswered, and the business details on a dozen directories are three years out of date. Each element is individually unremarkable and together they give search engines an incoherent picture of a single business.

Who this is for

When this work makes sense

  • Businesses whose customers search with a place name or on a phone nearby
  • Practices, clinics, trades and professional services dependent on local enquiries
  • Companies serving several towns or areas from one base
  • Businesses that worked on their profile and saw results plateau
  • Firms whose competitors appear locally despite a weaker offering
How to choose

Questions worth asking any supplier

Does the programme cover the website as well as the profile? Working on one alone tends to plateau.

Do your website and profile agree on services, areas and phone number? Disagreement is common and self-inflicted.

Is there a review process, or do reviews arrive by accident?

Are your details consistent across the directories search engines cross-reference?

Is anyone measuring calls? For most local businesses the phone is where the result actually lands.

How we work

Process

Local work starts with a coherence check between the website and the profile — comparing services, areas, hours and phone number across both, line by line. In most audits they disagree in several places, and nobody inside the business knew. Fixing that disagreement is frequently the cheapest improvement available, because it requires no new content and removes contradictions search engines have been reconciling on your behalf.

The standard nine stages — discovery, strategy, UX/UI, development, content and SEO, testing, launch, measurement, continuous improvement — apply to every project. The paragraph above is what differs for this one.

Pricing

What moves the number

Pricing depends on scope, functionality, integrations and content requirements. These are the factors that change it most:

  • Number of locations and the size of the area each serves
  • How much local website content needs writing
  • Current state of citations and how much correction is needed
  • Review volume and whether a request process must be built
  • Category competitiveness in your specific area
Comparison

Profile only, website only, or the full programme

Google Business Profile only

Fits: Businesses whose enquiries come almost entirely through Maps and calls

Limits: Plateaus — the website is one of the signals supporting the profile

Website local content only

Fits: Businesses whose customers research before contacting

Limits: Forfeits the map pack, which captures a large share of local clicks

Full local programme

Fits: Most local businesses, because the surfaces reinforce each other

Limits: More work across more fronts, and it takes longer to show in full

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from Google Maps SEO?

Maps SEO is specifically about ranking in the map pack. Local SEO is the wider programme — the map pack plus organic results for place-based searches, supported by your website, citations and reviews. Maps SEO is a component of it rather than a synonym.

We only have one location. Is local SEO relevant?

Usually more relevant, not less. A single-location business competes on a tightly defined area and every signal counts. Businesses with many locations have other problems, mainly consistency.

How far can we realistically rank from our address?

It varies by category and density. In a competitive urban category visibility can fall away within a few kilometres; in a rural area with few competitors it may extend much further. We map how your visibility actually varies before setting expectations.

Do we need pages for every town we serve?

Only for towns you can write something true and specific about. Duplicated pages with the place name swapped are doorway pages and tend to suppress each other rather than ranking.

Our competitor has hundreds of reviews and we have twelve.

That gap takes time and there is no shortcut worth taking — buying reviews risks the listing. A consistent request process asking every customer closes it faster than most businesses expect, because the constraint is usually that nobody is asking.

Does our website matter if most enquiries come through Maps?

Yes, in two ways. It is one of the signals used to assess your relevance and prominence, and it is where people go to decide whether to call you after they have found the listing.
